Hi. I'm at the director of engineering level, but my heart isn't in it anymore. I'm much more interested in product management. I have done a lot of product management throughout my career, but have not held the title formally.

I also have a family, so I don't want to take a huge pay cut. Any advice on how to make this transition? I work at a small startup, so there's no PM division to move into -- I'll need to go to another employer.

For anyone who has switched careers, what level did you move into? Was there an accelerated timeline? I'm a strong manager.
