Do you want end-to-end encryption for your photos?https://slik.app

Hi fellow Elphas,My friend is building a privacy focused photo backup solution and was looking for some advice. They are trying out a new idea for photo backup and sharing, i.e. similar to Google Photos, but with Zero-Knowledge Encryption. After doing some initial research they found that Google Photos does only encryption in transit, and at rest - however, according to their terms of service, they are able to look at our photos and do things with it. Like - wild guess - target ads, build new ML models at Google Brain, etc.Apple Photos on the other hand has end-to-end encryption, but the encryption keys are backed up to their cloud. So, they might not do anything with those photos, however, they do have the ability to, in case they wanted/were forced to.Some features at Google/Apple Photos, like their search/auto-video generation, are pretty world-class, so definitely that is something they're trying to incorporate, but were wondering if this is something anyone would be interested in using? If you would be, please let me know and I can put you in touch with them. You can enter their waitlist here: https://slik.appIf you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them down here too. :)Thanks for reading and thanks for your help!
Hey @charvimittalAppreciate, Indeed a great idea though. But have a question in my mind, Let's say I am sharing photos with you, so assuming you will get a unique URL generated against the photo shared, what if the URL is accessible to some person who doesn't know both of us. In that case, the photo will be accessible to that 3rd person and he might share it with N number of people. How do you think to prevent such cases?
Hey @MonishaSurana, that's actually a great question. That is one of the problems that you could face on Google Photos (because they generally believe in security through ofuscation). However, in Slik's systems they secure it using encryption keys, so even though the N number of people might have the shared url, they would still need your unique security codes before being able to view or download the image. The gif on their website explains it well I think. Attached it here for reference:
Hey @charvimittalI got you, but again from the explanation, I got one more doubt.. Ahh Bear with meπŸ˜ƒWill the security code going to be different for each photo as well? OR for one user codes will be going to be the same and that user can have N number of photos. I am getting confused a bit here because a single user can receive N number of photos from N number of people, in that case, it would be difficult for the user to remain N numbers of security code. It will be an overhead to the end-user to remember the passcodes while maintaining end-to-end encryption on the photos.
No worries. Great question again. :) The user just enters one passcode and they handle all the complexities in the background - as I learn. If you do signup, I can request them to onboard you into the app sooner so that you can play around with it. (dm me your email/referral code). Out of curiosity - what use case do you find end-to-end encryption most useful for yourself? 1) personal photographs, 2) all photographs, or 3) work related confidential photographs
Hey @charvimittalI have already signed up over the platform.I find end-to-end encryption most useful almost in all cases.
Sounds right up my alley! I can help them. I’m a professional photographer that’s building a SaaS platform for photographers (to run their business). I know a lot about photographers needs for security and backup of their images as well as from a consumer sis! Send them my way [email protected]
Sounds great. I sent them your way.
Sounds pretty cool, kind of like the b2c version of this? https://tresorit.com/
yes, almost. Slik is however only focussed for photos.
I've been looking for a private backup solution, definitely want to check them out. Are there different pricing tiers for how many photos one backs up?
Hey @ElleDM, apologies for the late reply! I just got confirmation that the pricing plans are based on storage used in GB, with a free tier of somewhere around 5-10GB. The website should also reflect the pricing plans by end of this week, as I gather. :)
Very cool, excited to see how it works and wishing them well!
