My 4th great-grandfather, Nero Cooper I (1813–1900) served as a Private in the 12th Regiment of the Civil War’s Colored Infantry. A member of my Black American family has fought in almost every war in the nation’s history. Civil War, The Revolutionary War of 1812, and World War I & II. Cooper was the property of a famous slaveholder and Illinois senator, Stephen A. Douglas.
