Breaking into tech as a recent graduateFeatured

When I graduated in July 2022 with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Technology, I found myself asking the classic question: what next? The uncertainty that followed was overwhelming.

As a recent graduate, I was filled with both excitement and anxiety about stepping into the professional world. Job hunting began with referrals and online applications on platforms like Glassdoor and Indeed, but I quickly realized that the market was highly competitive. Despite my efforts, I received no feedback. The silence was discouraging, but I chose to see it as a sign to keep pushing forward.

In May 2023, I landed an internship as a Junior Developer at a software company in Raleigh, North Carolina. This opportunity felt like a breakthrough. The company’s hybrid work model, coupled with its strong emphasis on diversity and inclusivity, made it feel like a second home. However, adapting to the corporate world was a steep learning curve. The expectations and pace were intense, but I was fortunate to have a mentor who provided guidance and support. This mentorship was invaluable, helping me navigate the complexities of the professional environment.

After the three-month unpaid internship, I was hungry for more growth. I started looking for full-time roles but quickly realized that the job market was still challenging. During this period, I felt a mix of determination and frustration. I knew I had the skills and passion, but finding the right opportunity was proving to be difficult. My family, though far away, was a source of constant encouragement. They believed in me, and that belief kept me going.

In a twist of fate, an unplanned opportunity came my way. I relocated to spend time with my family and applied for a new role. This led to a month-long technical interview process known as a Piscine. The interview was intense, requiring me to unlearn, relearn, and absorb new concepts at a rapid pace. It was a challenging experience, but my family’s support was unwavering. They were my anchor, and their belief in my abilities pushed me through the toughest moments.

I have always been fascinated by the world of software engineering. The thrill of solving problems and creating something new has always been my driving force. When I learned about Zone 01 Kisumu’s program, which is based in Kenya, it felt like the perfect opportunity. The application process was unique – involving online games and a technical interview – and it promised a comprehensive five-year journey to becoming a full-stack developer. This was exactly what I needed: a structured path with long-term growth and development.

Returning to my hometown after years away was another significant adjustment. Kisumu had changed, and so had I. Reconnecting with my family and adapting to the new dynamics of the city was both exciting and challenging. Being near my loved ones provided a sense of balance and fulfillment that I hadn’t felt in a long time. It was a reminder that while career growth is important, personal connections and well-being are equally vital.

My journey has been guided by Warren Buffet’s quote: “Never sleepwalk through life and just let life pass you by.” This philosophy has driven me to take risks, embrace new opportunities, and never settle for less than I deserve. It’s a reminder to be present, proactive, and intentional in every step I take.

For recent graduates, my advice is simple: keep exploring and tapping into your potential. The world is full of opportunities, and there is no perfect moment to start – just begin. Be proactive in your field, and remember that long-term consistency beats short-term intensity. Play the long game, and trust that your efforts will pay off.

Transitioning into tech from different industries can be daunting, but it’s entirely possible with the right approach. Leverage your transferable skills. For instance, if you’re good at sales, consider a career in tech sales. If you have a finance background, fintech might be the right fit. Networking is crucial – attend summits, conferences, and meetups to grow your connections and learn from industry leaders. Lastly, build a strong social media presence, especially on LinkedIn. Let the platform work for you by showcasing your skills and connecting with potential employers and mentors.

Looking back, my journey has been a blend of perseverance, learning, and support from those around me. The path hasn’t always been straightforward, but each challenge has shaped me into a more resilient and skilled professional. As I continue to grow in my career, I am excited about the future and the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

Thank you for reading my story. I hope it resonates with you and provides some encouragement to keep pushing forward in your own journey. The tech world is vast and full of opportunities – all you need is the courage to take the first step.
