Recommendations on the best forum software for starting an online community?

I'd love everyone's input on what the best software for hosting an online community is! I've seen a few platforms that look interesting but not sure what the most popular one is. (Sidenote: is it just me or does Elpha's layout look very similar to Flarum?) Thanks!!

This is coming in a bit late but a team member sourced this resource that pulls together some of the notable names in software: https://orbit.love/community-tools-index -- One they are missing, that I personally have used is HigherLogic. Usually there isn't a clear frontrunner in popularity but rather each platform has a focus that they do better (such as Customer Service vs Community of Practice).
