Resumes - Your first impression to a potential employer
I review literally thousands of resumes every week for the companies I work for. The number one mistake I see over and over again is applicants that don't take the time to update their resumes. 1. Before you submit a resume online or to a company, review it with fresh eyes. Are there grammatical or spelling mistakes? Is the spacing correct? Are you using a basic font (which is what you should use) or is it to elaborate and flowery? 2. Don't overload your resume with every job you have had since high school. (unless you are 21 years old). If you are 40 years old and have 20 years of employers/jobs listed, try to reduce it to 10 years.3. If you choose to use your photo, keep it professional. It is not the time to find that really cute selfie you took for Instagram with a pound of makeup on. KISS =keep it simple stupid :-)4. If you choose to include an Employment Objective heading, make sure it is applicable to the job you are applying for. I work for a Restaurant Group. You would not believe how many people submit resumes stating they are looking for a job where they can put their marketing skills to work. Huh? You're applying to be a restaurant cook but you want to work as a marketing specialist?5. Lastly and most importantly of all, make sure your phone and email information is accurate.
