I am looking for opportunities to work on projects to improve website user interfaces as part of a research project. The work will be done for free. Any idea where such jobs can be found?

I assume you have a background in website improvements and come in and work right away with minimal training? But in exchange, you’d use the learnings for your research project. If that’s the case, and since you’re effectively volunteering your time and expertise, I have no doubt you’ll find takers! You can post something on your linkedin explaining your experience with regard to website improvements and what you plan to do with the result of the project. Call it a pro bono consultancy in exchange for market research/research project and see what happens! Elpha is also a great place to start, if you want to explain a little more the project is and what you want to get out of it.
