Medical Leave without notice - what do I do?

I am working at a place where my work environment is so hostile, that I need to take a medical leave because it is so stressful and exacerbating my anxiety and depression to places I’ve never had before. Anyway, I know you should request one in advance but I didn’t know I would hit my limit at this moment in time. I know I should just send an email saying I must take a leave, but is there more I should do? I’m going to call out for a few days since I’m such a mess right now and I’m trying to figure it all out. I’m talking to a lawyer who is reviewing my case now. Does anyone know anything or have any experience in this area? HR perspective? Legal perspective? Maybe you’ve done a medical leave in CA before with no employer notice?
I can’t offer legal advice but I would definitely take the full extent of personal and medical leave available to you in your contract. It sounds like you had a few personal days you could take so I hope that gives you a little space to make a decision in a less urgent way. Medical leave is often taken with no notice - imagine if you broke a leg over the weekend and needed surgery. Mental health is health. Unfortunately we’ve all heard the horror stories of employers retaliating so I think it’s great that your seeking counsel. Take care of yourself first and foremost!
