Career Stop

Hello all,

I just joined Elpha and am encouraged by the comments here. Although they all confirm my experience. This job market is rough and not much hope is out there.

I recently lost my job and am quite devasted by the way things played out. Im left questioning my value and feeling very much like I have to start over in my career.

I have about 6 months to gather myself and am wondering if anyone would recommend a class or certification that really adds value to a career. Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

*if there's no such thing please let me know that also.

Thanks,

A

Hi Andria,Welcome here! We're delighted to have you. I am sorry you are going through this rough phase! Easier said than done but don't take these personally and know it's not a reflection of you or your skills. A lot of external parameters that are currently out of your control. All you can do is take it a day at a time and keep moving forward. What role were you in before? And why do you think you might need to start over? In the meantime, if you're struggling financially, I'd suggest exploring "fast" cash opportunities like working in a retail role or hospitality (restaurant server etc) because the cycle to hire is typically quicker than your "traditional" white collar/desk role and these establishments are always looking for people.Sending you love!
Thanks so much for reaching out with support. Most recently I was a manager with a private aviation company. It’s a close-knit business in my area and I want to work in a different field at this point. I know I have skills that are transferable but after months of applying for work on the mid-exec level I’m beginning to lose faith.
I get wanting to do something different - I've switched careers so many times. But is your desire to work in a different field coming from a place of running away from your frustration, or running towards something you're feeling called to do? @andriadouseP.S. I just posted my story about moving on from a job on LinkedIn today. Feel free to peep: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7244405926974144512/
That’s a good question. I don’t really know. I’m kind of lost right now.
@andriadouse It sounds like you might need a break. Even if its just for a couple days. Give yourself permission to take some space from this so that there's room for answers.
Of course, Andria! So you want to leave the world of aviation but remain in a simila function? (what was it by the way) OR you want to switch both function and industry. It might slightly easier to do the former and go into an industry that's akin to aviation in terms of regulations or ways of doing business/selling etc. Where are you applying and what skills are you mostly putting out there? it might be worth testing out different approaches to see what responds more favourably?
I’m open to many possibilities most important to me to something that has a little more security. I would like to be in a position to grow and have longevity.
what are your skillsets and what roles are you looking? I think you need to have some kinds of bounds to know else it's also a bit hard to guide you.
