What's the right job title for your first business hire?

Hi Elphas,

I'm hiring my first business hire for my zero-waste manufacturing company, Mobius, and I am at a loss on what title to use. They'll be doing a mix of roles (sales, marketing, ops).

Generally, I want to attract a early career person that cares about growth and a zero waste mission. I want to make sure they feel valued but that my title system has room to grow.

Any advice appreciated!

Hey Margaret! I was the first business hire at my company doing a mix of sales, marketing. and ops. My title was Strategy and Partnerships. I've also seen a few variations that use BizOps. Business Development is pretty vague too if you wanted to go that route.

Thanks, that's helpful! Did you have a "Head of", "Manager" or anything like that?

Not officially, but my CEO would often introduce me as "Head of BD" or "Head of Strategy & Partnerships" to clients. Titles weren't really important to either of us, so I just rolled with it depending on the day. 🤷🏼‍♀️
