1 Career Shift, hold the Customer Service

I have been working as a junior web developer practically since finishing my undergrad 5 years ago. My current position is client facing, and I just REALLY don't like it. Dealing with difficult and/or needy people has seriously crushed my soul and made me lose faith in humanity. The actual work of coding is fun to me. I want to keep coding, but in a more independent, less client facing role. I'm creative, and eager to learn new programming languages. I know there's something out there for me that will meet my desire to work with subject matter experts, code in a computer, and a supervisor... and not many people outside of that. Anyone have any insight on what I should be looking for in a next step?
