Figuring out which company is best for work-life balance depends on what you consider to be important for striking that balance.
Does it mean having a job with flexible work hours? Or is it working for a company that offers unlimited PTO (and a manager that encourages you to take it)?

What does work-life balance mean to them?: "We pride ourselves on our work life balance. Leaders at Accord know that running a Seed stage company is a marathon, not a sprint and that our employees need balance to be successful. It is very rare that we work during nights or weekends, but it is important to note that folks can set their own schedules. We are fully remote, so we try to overlap 8a-12p PT daily, but outside of those hours it is up to you to get your work done. We also have no meetings Tu/Th after 10a PT.”

What does work-life balance mean to them?: "Slab is built for sustainability — for both the company and its people. We believe constant down-to-the-wire deadlines, unforeseen fires and long hours are symptoms of bad planning and engineering quality. Without investor pressure to grow prematurely or customers who can dictate timelines, we fully expect people to have lives outside of work, and 40 hours is enough.
As a global company distributed across North America, Europe, and Asia, we are productive asynchronous workers and don't have standard working hours. Employees are free to schedule their days with preferred breaks or flexibility to run personal errands. With only 3-4 internal meetings per week, there is plenty of time for deep focused work!”

They are building payments infrastructure to power $750 trillion in bank transfers every year.
What does work-life balance mean to them?: "We believe in working hard and smart. We are building a company for the long-term and want our employees to also be here for a long time, rather than get burnt out after 2 years – which ties in with our value of “making decisions for longevity”.
Although we hold ourselves to a high bar and work hard to support our customers, we value work-life balance. Modern Treasury employees work on different cadences depending on how they are most effective. Working on the weekends is rare and mostly driven by personal ambition or meaningful deadlines. We encourage our team to go on vacation (real vacations, where you don’t go online for at least 1-2 weeks).”

Mekonos
What do they do?: Mekonos is an innovative biotech startup, building a solution that enables and accelerates precision medicine, synthetic biology & fundamental science.
What does work-life balance mean to them?: "We don’t generally have distinguished rules on working hours, but the team tends to start between 8:30 - 9:30 am and leave between 6 - 7pm. You will find folks online outside of this window, depending on the work demands, rules of our shared facilities, as well as how they want to align their day. For most of our team, it is the exception rather than the rule to find people working at night on weekends. We expect urgent work will come up every so often by virtue of being a start-up; however, it is certainly not the long-term expectation. Our employees are empowered to set boundaries as they need, to establish work-life harmony as it applies to them.”

HealthSherpa
What do they do?: HealthSherpa is a profitable and fast-growing healthcare startup that is helping people find, enroll in, and use ACA health coverage.
What does work-life balance mean to them?: "It means putting your mental and physical well being first. It means creating healthy boundaries and looking to your employer and peers to support you in doing that. We recognize not every person has the tools or space to do this on their own. We truly believe that having a happy and healthy life lends itself well to outcomes in the work place.
We know we can only influence so much as employers, but doing what we can to model our values (no slack / emails / comms after work hours, taking time off, staying offline during PTO, bringing awareness to mental health and our own experiences, flexible PTO, Employee assistance programs, inclusive benefits, etc.) as leaders is key.”

Ethena
What do they do?: Ethena is a compliance learning platform built for today’s teams. Their micro-learning approach to compliance training is designed for retention, and their entertaining and informative content is designed for a cringe-free experience.
What does work-life balance mean to them?: "We take work-life balance extremely seriously. Just because we’re a startup does not mean we need chaos and long days. While some weeks are busier than others, most employees average 40-45 hours worked per week.
We don’t micro manage people’s schedules — if you need time off in the middle of the day for school pick up, a trip to the vet, or a long lunch with friends visiting from out of town, take it. As long as you get your job done, you’re free to schedule your own breaks in the way that works best for you. If an employee consistently works 45+ hours, we take that as a sign that it's time explore whether there's an underlying issue: efficiency, bandwidth, etc.
We strive to be mindful of other people’s schedules — if you’re answering emails at night because that's what works best for your schedule that day, schedule your emails to go out in the morning so no one feels pressured to answer you while they’re recharging.”

What do they do?: Kolide is a SaaS app that sends employees important, timely, and relevant security recommendations for their Linux, Mac, and Windows devices, right inside Slack.
What does work-life balance mean to them?: "We recognize that everyone works a little differently! Our team knows their schedule best, and we all have commitments outside of work. Of course, we want you to show up as your best self, so we encourage you to work when you can be your most productive. As a remote company, we want you to work when it's right for you, where it’s right for you. We do not want our teammates to burn out, or feel that if they’re not working a 12 hour day, they are not helping the company succeed.
Many folks will let the team know when they are going out to walk their dog, run to an appointment, or have to leave early to pick their kids up from school. This is expected and welcomed at Kolide. We have unlimited PTO as well as a wellness stipend for gyms, nutrition/acupuncture or mediation apps too, which help support overall wellbeing. Employees are encouraged to block weekly appointments for their mental and physical health as well. All of these contribute to our culture of hard work and balance with our personal lives.”

We have an unlimited PTO policy and enforce a 15-day minimum (excluding holidays) for everyone in the organization.
Our employees have the ability to set their own schedules — we focus on flexibility to enable everyone to balance work with their different lifestyles and optimal focus times. Zapier
What do they do?: Zapier is on a mission to democratize automation—to give people freedom from tasks that computers can do for them instead. With Zapier, you can integrate over 5,000 apps like Salesforce, Intuit, Google, and Dropbox, to move data between them automatically, so you can focus on your most important work.
What does work-life balance mean to them?: "To us, work/life balance isn’t just about making time for your friends, family, and passions outside of work (although of course, that’s important). We also encourage people to take breaks during the day to connect with others in the company. This could be a monthly team lunch (we’ll expense your meal and often play an online game together) or a fun social to learn from others. We also have weekly events such as Zappy Hour to bring the entire company together. They’re optional and we record them for people who’d like to enjoy them on their own time. What’s more, we have over five hundred pages of #fun- Slack channels such as #fun-cooking, #fun-fitness, #funDND, and #fun-adulting, just to name a few.
Our asynchronous working style allows us to have flexibility around when we do our work. Whether that means taking a midday break to go to the gym, making sure you can pick your kids up from school every day, or running errands, we trust you to get your work done while living your life.
Folks who thrive at Zapier have a bias for action, are able to prioritize effectively (focusing on the most impactful tasks), and are thoughtful communicators. We record important meetings and are happy to work around each other’s schedules to make sure everyone’s voice is heard.”
